Enviro Pukeko goes home!

As part of our 'Zero waste challenge' prize, Room 1 won some lovely books about looking after our environment, reusable sandwich wrappers, zero waste hero badges and a very cheeky Pukeko! We have been working hard to keep our school clean ever since. We decided that our star of the day could take Pukeko home and share the books with their family. Here are some of the adventures Pukeko has had so far. We have learnt a lot about looking after our planet by reading our lovely stories with our families.

Zero Waste Hero Competition

After completing our audits Room 1 entered the Central Otago District Councils, 'Zero Waste Challenge'. We made two posters about being wrapper free. We reused old paper to make our poster. Guess what... we won a prize!!!
Four children from Room 1 went with Mrs Klahn to the Council in Alexandra to collect our prize. We were very nervous!

Have a look at our entry and all of the other ones here...

Room 1's Opinions

We read some stories about what happens when rubbish is dropped in our parks, lakes, rivers and in the ocean. We wrote our opinions about what should happen to people who drop rubbish. Here are some of them.

Room 1's playground rubbish audit

After looking in our lunch boxes we realised what a big problem wrappers are. We went out into the playground to see what we could find. Next we sorted the rubbish into groups and counted how many things in each group. There were far too many wrappers! We need to take action!

Room 1's lunchbox audit

Room 1 had a look in our lunch boxes and counted the different types of wrappers we had. We thought of ideas to become better at being wrapper free. Here is what we found in our lunch boxes. Our challenge is to improve on this!
